Steven Pressfield Biography

Steven Pressfield is an American author of historical fiction, best known for books like The Legend of Bagger Vance, Gates of Fire and Tides of War.

He has written at least 20 fiction and non-fiction books. His book, The Legend of Bagger Vance, was made into a film in 2000 which starred Will Smith, Charlize Theron, and Matt Damon.

Pressfield has also written several Hollywood screenplays including King Kong Lives (1986), Above the Law (1988) and Freejack (1992).

Pressfield was born on September 1, 1943 in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He wrote for 27 years before he could a book published. His first book, Legend of the Bagger Vance, was published in 1995 when he was 53 years old.

As he struggled to get his books published, Pressfield worked over 21 jobs including as an advertising copywriter, US Marine, Hollywood scriptwriter, attendant in a mental hospital, fruit picker, schoolteacher, tractor-trailer driver, and bartender.

His book, War of Art, describes his struggles to make a living as an author including a period when he was homeless and living out of the back of his car.
